Introducing Kate McCurrach, or @macurack on Instagram. Be sure to give her a follow and show her some love!

What part of the world do you currently live in?

I live in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. It’s in the southern interior of BC, which is Canada’s westernmost province.

When did your art or crafting journey begin?

I’ve been a lifelong creator. For about a decade, I ran a science-themed craft business through Etsy and local art markets. Eventually I had to step away because of chronic illness and raising young children.

In 2023, I decided to return to art and creativity as a way to support my mental health and help me cope with chronic illness. Getting back into mixed media and creating again has been such an important part of my life.

How long have you been in Fodder School and what keeps you coming back each year?

I joined Fodder School late in FS2 so about midway through 2023. I had just got back into creating and saw so many spectacular projects on Instagram I couldn’t miss out any longer! Once I was in, I was hooked. I love the pace, the community, and the fact that somehow I keep learning new amazing things involving painting papers and creating with them. The community and inspiration is endless and I love how supportive the fellow students and teachers are.

How has Fodder School influenced your creative journey or daily art practice?

Fodder School has helped me become much more open to experimenting creatively. I’m far more willing to jump into a project even if it feels intimidating or completely outside my usual style.

What I love is that I always discover some part of the process that pulls me into that excited creative flow state. One month naturally leads into the next, and I find myself continually inspired to keep creating and trying new things.

What’s one project, technique, or lesson from FS that completely lit you up?

That’s such a hard question because there have been so many! One project that really surprised me was Kecia Deveny’s hanging book project from July in FS3.

When I first saw it, I honestly thought, β€œThere’s no way this is something I’d want to make.” But I decided to try it anyway, and I completely fell in love with the project. I ended up creating a huge chunky book filled with little doodads, tokens, and hanging elements. It now hangs in my bedroom and makes me happy every time I walk past it.

I especially love projects that finally give purpose to all the craft supplies I’ve been collecting and saving for years!

How would you describe the Fodder School community in three words?

Uplifting, caring and amazing.
