Fodder School Muse-of-the-Month: Kate McCurrach
It’s time to meet our next Muse of the Month!
Introducing Kate McCurrach, or @macurack on Insta; Be sure to give her a follow and show her some love!
What part of the world do you currently live in?
I live in Kamloops, British Columbia Canada, so it’s the most western province and I’m in the southern interior.
When did your art or crafting journey begin?
I’ve been a lifelong creator. I ran a science themed craft business (Etsy and art markets) for about a decade but had to stop due to illness and young children. I decided to get back into art in 2023 as a tool to help me cope with chronic illness and for my mental health.
How long have you been in Fodder School and what keeps you coming back each year?
I joined Fodder School late in FS2 so about midway through 2023. I had just got back into creating and saw so many spectacular projects on Instagram I couldn’t miss out any longer! Once I was in, I was hooked. I love the pace, the community, and the fact that somehow I keep learning new amazing things involving painting papers and creating with them. The community and inspiration is endless and I love how supportive the fellow students and teachers are.
How has Fodder School influenced your creative journey or daily art practice?
Absolutely! I am much more willing to blindly go into a month and give anything (even things I would previously have been much too intimidated, afraid, or just not “my style”) a try! I always seem to find some element I enjoy and get carried off down the rabbit hole of excited creating and flow state. Then the month rolls into the next and I get whisked away on the next project in the best way.
What’s one project, technique, or lesson from FS that completely lit you up?
Oh that’s hard to pinpoint! One of the first projects I remember doing that stood out to me as something I would just sort of attempt but not get into was Kecia Deveny’s hanging book project of July FS3. I remember seeing it and thinking, “there’s no way this is something I would want to create but I’ll give it a try.” I fell head over heels for it! I ended up making a hugely chunky book and so many little doodads and tokens to hang from it and it’s now in my bedroom and brings me joy every single time I walk past it. I love when a project comes along that somehow makes all those craft supplies I’ve been hoarding for years finally have a purpose!
How would you describe the Fodder School community in three words?
Uplifting, caring and amazing
We’re endlessly inspired by our Fodder School superfans and the heart they bring to this community. Stay tuned for more spotlights!
