If you're just getting started with mixed media art, the sheer number of products, tools, and mediums available can feel overwhelming. From paints and papers to gels, pastes, inks, stamps, and collage materials, there are countless options to choose from.
The good news? You do not need to understand or own all of these materials to begin creating mixed media art.
In fact, one of the best ways to learn mixed media is to take it one project at a time. Rather than trying to master every supply and technique upfront, choose a project that interests you, gather the materials needed for that project, and start creating. As you continue exploring different techniques, you'll naturally build a collection of supplies and discover which materials you enjoy using most.
Many beginners make the mistake of purchasing a variety of random art supplies and then trying to figure out what to do with them. While that approach can work, it often leads to frustration and wasted money. A better approach is to learn through guided projects that introduce materials in a practical way.
This is where mixed media classes and teachers can be incredibly helpful. Experienced instructors have already tested the products, techniques, and combinations that work well together.
