Start with the simplest zipper pouch.
Finish knowing what the heck you’re doing.
Welcome to The Pouch Lab—a ridiculously comprehensive, skill-building sewing adventure disguised as a whole bunch of really great zipper pouches.
If you’ve ever looked at a zipper and thought, Nope…
…Or bought a zipper foot but aren’t entirely sure what you’re supposed to do with it…
…Or followed a sewing pattern successfully while still feeling like you don’t actually understand what you’re doing…
This class is for you!
And if you already know your way around a sewing machine but want to become a pouch-making wizard? Yep. Also for you.
Now, watch this video for all the juicy details!
We’re starting simple. Really simple.
Your first project is the most basic little pouch we could possibly make—an unlined zipper pouch. You’ll learn how to cut your fabric, understand your zipper, use a zipper foot, sew that zipper into your fabric, finish your seams and turn the whole thing right side out.
TA-DA! You made a pouch.
But more importantly? You learned something.
Here’s how the course works
And now we build!
Your next pouch gets a lining → The next one gets a pleated bottom.
Then we start boxing corners → Adding pockets → Making patchwork.
Quilting as we go → Using zipper tape → Adding wrist straps and D-rings.
Working with waxed canvas, metal zippers, pre-quilted fabric, bias tape, Flex Foam and fusible adhesive.
We make curves, We make gussets → We quilt, We fussy cut, We install hardware, We make our own bias tape.
We even perform a few acts of what Heather affectionately refers to as FABRIC GYMNASTICS.
Every pouch introduces something new while reinforcing what you already learned.
One pouch → Then another→ Then another!
Until all those mysterious sewing techniques that once seemed intimidating start feeling like things you simply…know how to do.
THIS ISN'T REALLY A CLASS ABOUT POUCHES.
(Okay. It is. There are 12 glorious pouches.)
But The Pouch Lab is really about building your sewing skills through repetition, progression and actually MAKING things.
Instead of sitting through a giant lesson about interfacing, you use interfacing.
Instead of trying to memorize five different ways to finish a seam, you encounter them naturally while making projects that require them.
Instead of learning a random technique and wondering when you'll ever use it again, you immediately put it to work.
And because every project builds upon the one before it, you're not starting from scratch twelve times.
You're building a sewing vocabulary.
By the time you reach the final pouch, you'll have used the same foundational skills again and again—while steadily adding new techniques, materials and construction methods. That is where the magic happens.
FROM "HOW DO I PUT IN A ZIPPER?"…
…TO "I CAN TOTALLY MAKE THAT!"
Imagine being able to look at a pouch and understand how it was constructed. Imagine knowing why you'd choose one interfacing over another. Imagine knowing…
How to change the dimensions.
How to add a pocket.
How to box a corner.
How to make a wrist strap.
How to work with zipper tape.
How to finish those ugly raw seams.
How to add a gusset.
How to turn a pile of fabric, foam, hardware and one slightly terrifying zipper into something that looks REALLY FREAKING GOOD.
That's where we're headed. Not because Heather is going to dump 75 sewing techniques into your lap and say, "Good luck!"
But because we're going to learn them one pouch at a time.
WHAT YOU'LL MAKE + LEARN
That's the entire philosophy behind The Pouch Lab.
You don't need to know all of this before you begin. That's why you're here.
You don't need to be "good at sewing."
You don't need to understand interfacing.
You don't need to know what a gusset is.
You don't need to be friends with your zipper foot.
We're going to start with the pouch you can make right now.
The best way to learn how to sew? Is TO SEW!
Then Heather is going to teach you the next thing.
And the next thing… And the next thing.
Twelve pouches later, you'll have a stack of useful, giftable, completely adorable handmade pouches.
But the real thing you're taking home?
A whole lot more confidence at your sewing machine.
Welcome to The Pouch Lab.
Let's make some pouches.
